There Is Only One Story

Antihero

There are various types of Hero: a) the good, willing Hero (Star Wars, 1977), b) the good, unwilling Hero (Shawshank Redemption, 1994), c) the Anti-Hero (Raging Bull, 1980; Goodfellas, 1990; Scarface, 1983) etc.

Nevertheless, their stories all mirror the Hero's Journey template. The divergence between Hero, Anti-Hero and other variations plainly lies in situation, motivation and result (Heroes evolve, Anti-Heroes regress).

The different Hero-types are plainly alternate Archetypes. See "Advanced Archetypes."

*****Antiheroes and Romantic Challenges*****

Where the Hero evolves, the Antihero devolves. So it is not unusual to find that the Antihero starts off with a close personal relationship that devolves (whereas the Hero most often starts off with a polarized Romantic Challenge that moderately evolves). In The Godfather (1972), Michael and Kay are initially close but their relationship devolves toward the end. In Scarface (1983) Tony and Elvira ultimately separate.

*****Transformation Mentor*****

Before the Trials and Transformation, it is not uncommon to meet a Transformation Mentor. This man may be cut off and confident from the earlier Mentor / Supernatural Aid. In Gladiator (2000), Proximo sees to it that Maximus becomes a Gladiator. In Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Mamaha is responsible for Sayuri's transformation into Geisha. In King Kong (2005), it is King Kong that causes the Transformation. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), it is Sallah.
It is not unusual for the Transformation Mentor to achieve a dual role. In Walk the Line (2005), June Carter Cash is both the Transformation Mentor and Romantic Challenge.

There Is Only One Story

The 188 Stage Hero'S Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than plainly three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for construction and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are commonly four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

*****Physical Marker*****

The corporeal disjunction is marked by a corporeal Marker. In Romancing the Stone (1984), Jack and Joan have to cross the rope bridge across the gorge. In Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), both have to jump into the river down below to flee their pursuers. In The Godfather (1972), Michael's killing of McCluskey is all over the news.

Resisting the corporeal Separation. The decision to Transform is often not taken lightly. There is resistance to crossing the corporeal Marker. In Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), both have to jump into the river down below to flee their pursuers (Sundance: "I can't swim." Butch: "Why you crazy, the fall will probably kill you.")

Preparing to Physically Separate. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John is tired of waiting to engage with the Indians. He decides to introduce himself.

*****Physical Separation*****

The Hero makes a corporeal disjunction from the Belly of the Whale and to the Trials Transformation. Characteristics include:

Conscious Decision. The Hero often consciously decides to leave the Belly of the Whale. In Thelma and Louise (1991), Louise asks Thelma is she wants to go to Mexico. She says yes. In Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Lawrence has to go back into the desert to saving the fallen Arab. In Dances with Wolves (1990), John Dunbar travels to the Indian village. In Raging Bull (1980), Jake has a baby and puts on weight.

Forced Out or Pursued Out. The Hero may be forced out. In Star Wars (1977), Luke et al blast off Mos Isley - pursued by storm troopers. In The Godfather (1972), Michael Corleone bids farewell to Sonny, Tessio, Paulie et al and leaves, out of necessity, for Sicily.

Universal Terminology

The Hero's Journey uses definite terminology, such as "Final Conflict," "Hand-to-Hand Battle," "Unbearable Antagonism," "the Oracle," etc. Again, when taken literally, this misleadingly implies that it is fit for only definite story-types (Arthurian Legend, Damsel in Distress, Fantasy, etc). In fact, metaphorically, the terminology applies to the vast majority (in fact, every) thriving story or screenplay you may have come across:

In The Godfather (1972), when Sonny is gunned down, what is that if not an Unbearable Antagonism?

In Annie Hall (1977), when Alvie ultimately goes to meet Annie in Los Angeles, that is a Hand-to-Hand Battle and is the same one-on-one confrontation as Luke and Vader battling it out at the end of Star Wars (1977); the same mano-a-mano confrontation in the middle of Riggs and Joshua in Lethal Weapon (1987), the same confrontation as the one in the middle of John McClane and Hans Gruber in Die Hard (1988) and the same as the confrontation in the middle of Harry and Sally at the end of When Harry met Sally (1989).

*****Final Conflict: Allies against the Hero*****

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final friction (a metaphor for this stage) follows a safe bet process. One aspect of this stage is the possibility of allied soldiery turning against the hero. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy decides to go against David and give then Henry.

*****Apotheosis*****

It is the breaking out of old restraints and restrictions. In the Godfather (1972), Don Corleone gives his word not to break the peace, but Michael doesn't.

It is a seminal insight , an illumination, an epiphany. In Casablanca (1943), Rick's insight is that if you love someone, you cut yourself for their happiness. That cut can contain selling your most prized material possessions (he sells his bar), allowing your love to find happiness in another's arms (he ultimately allows Ilsa to be with Victor), physical suffering (it is likely that his ultimate actions will see him to a attentiveness camp), leaving dear friends (he will have to leave Sam behind) and forced exile from home and heart (he will have to leave Casablanca). He learns this insight from both Ilsa and Victor, who are prepared to do the same for each other.

It's magical how with his style and sound he's able to make even old songs sound brand new.

The way in which every single song is so well done on this Cd makes this a collection of tunes music fans like myself simply cannot pass on. Until Buble' Sinatra was hands down the smoothest of the Jazz singers. That is until Buble'.

Though still very young he has proven to be a very talented artist with the type of voice that even if Jazz isn't your popular style you can't help but appreciate his indeed silky flat vocal talents.

The Cd launches with a perfect track to start the collection of with in Feeling Good, and from there Buble' just bowls you over with his talent.

Overall Buble's vocals and the Cds production value make It's Time an outstanding release. What I call, must have music. I give it two thumbs up. A Cd even casual music fans will appreciate and enjoy listening to.

The standout tunes on It's Time are Feeling Good [track 1], Quando, Quando, Quando, a duet featuring Nelly Furtado [track 4], and Song For You, featuring Chris Botti [track 11]. My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On Repeat"] is track 9, Try A small Tenderness. Very nice!
